APPEAL TO THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

On 9 February 2021, it was reported that in the run-up to the voting on an emergency resolution on the human rights situation in Kazakhstan, the MFA of the RK exerted pressure on the European Union Delegation to Kazakhstan, MEPs Fulvio Martusciello, Thierry Mariani and Andris Ameriks intending to pass propaganda information to MEPs through them.

These actions were intended to remove from the text of the resolution the names of 26 political prisoners, politically persecuted activists and human rights defenders, as well as ethnic Kazakhs from Xinjiang and five victims of political killings.

The propaganda information was to be presented as the opinion of the EU Delegation, MEPs Thierry Mariani, Fulvio Martusciello and Andris Ameriks.

We consider such actions to be the ones that undermine the principles of impartiality on the part of MEPs Thierry Mariani, Fulvio Martuchello and Andris Ameriks and the EU Delegation, and aimed at weakening the position of the European Parliament on the deteriorating human rights situation in Kazakhstan.

Such actions are part of an attack on Kazakhstan's civil society, which is struggling to uphold the principles of democracy and human rights.

We call on MEPs to include the names of all political prisoners, human rights defenders and those prosecuted in politically motivated criminal cases. Every name is a life saved.

We call on the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, to conduct a full and transparent investigation into the actions of MEPs Thierry Mariani, Fulvio Martusciello and Andris Ameriks and the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan, and to take appropriate action.
